Effect
The mescaline high is described as a psychedelic-visionary, ecstatic state accompanied by feelings of bliss, but with great clarity and without the metallic sharpness of LSD.
Nausea and vomiting often occur before the medication takes effect.
The trip begins with hyperactivity and inner restlessness [1] , then an altered, sharpened perception and an intense visual effect occur.
What follows is a gently gliding experience. It involves reports of visions and a euphoria of religious depth, a connection to something ancient, a feeling of a visionary experience, a change in self-perception, and feelings of ego dissolution.
Onset of action
45 minutes – 1.5 hours after ingestion
Duration of effect
8 – 14 hours
Aftereffects
6 – 36 hours [2]
Risks and side effects
The pharmacological effects of mescaline and its bitter taste often lead to nausea, sometimes vomiting and diarrhea, in the initial phase of the trip. If vomiting occurs, the user may choke on the vomit (risk of suffocation)!
Other possible side effects include: increased pulse and blood pressure, dry mouth, sweating, dilated pupils, disorientation, confusion, anxiety, and increased body temperature [1] .
Long-term risks
It remains questionable whether the consumption of mescaline can trigger latent (hidden) mental disorders [1] . With repeated use over a short period, tolerance may develop, lasting for a few days.
Safer Use
-
Mescaline is not suitable as a party drug and should only be used by experienced users.
-
Only take mescaline with good preparation in an environment where you feel comfortable and only together with experienced friends (good setting) and/or a trip sitter (sober person).
-
Only take mescaline if you feel good mentally and physically (good set).
-
You shouldn't be afraid, but you should have enough respect for the effects of mescaline.
-
Mescaline should be taken on an empty stomach. Fasting before the trip can help reduce the likelihood of nausea and vomiting.
-
To combat nausea, it helps to take mescaline in small doses.
-
Don't use more if it doesn't work immediately.
-
Let yourself go during the trip and don't try to fight the effects of the mescaline. A trip sitter can help you with this.
-
Dextrose can help with circulatory problems.
-
Avoid streets and other “dangerous” places; your sense of direction may be impaired.
-
Drink plenty of water during the trip.
-
Absolutely avoid mixing substances, otherwise the effects are unpredictable.
-
Plan enough time for recovery after the trip (at least 1 day).
-
Mescaline trips should remain exceptional experiences.
-
In case of panic attacks or bad trips: shield yourself from stimuli, stay calm, "talk down/through".
-
People with mental health problems or illnesses, people who have to take neuroleptics, and people with heart problems should refrain from consuming mescaline.
