Risk assessment

A dab sample labeled as containing THC primarily contains delta-8-THC and only a small amount of THC.

Delta-8-THC (Δ8-THC) is a psychoactive cannabinoid that produces a similar intoxicating effect to delta-9-THC (the "classic" THC), but is less potent. It occurs naturally in the cannabis plant only in very small quantities, if at all. Delta-8-THC is most likely a byproduct of the chemical conversion of CBD (cannabidiol) to delta-9-THC. It cannot be ruled out that the byproducts of this conversion are toxic. Since manufacturers often fail to completely separate synthesis byproducts, and these byproducts are thus consumed along with delta-9-THC and delta-8-THC on cannabis products, consumption poses an unknown health risk. No studies exist on the short- and long-term side effects of delta-8-THC.

Safer Use

When using newly purchased, unfamiliar cannabis products, it is recommended to start with a small amount (two or three puffs) and then wait approximately 15 minutes for the effects to kick in. If you experience any unusual effects, discontinue use immediately.

Before consuming, thoroughly mix your cannabis products (ideally using a grinder) to avoid a high concentration of potentially synthetic cannabinoids on individual flower parts. Pay particular attention to the remaining material that has fallen from the outer flower parts, as this often contains a particularly high concentration of synthetic cannabinoids.

Avoid mixing substances. Mixing with other substances (including alcohol or medications) is very risky due to unpredictable and unknown interactions. Avoid mixing with alcohol, medications, MAOIs, and other drugs (tranquilizers, opioids).
